Spotlight: Fela And The Kalakuta Queens
This theatrical masterpiece not only focuses on Fela, but on his wives who played a huge role in the pioneering of Afrobeats
The theatre is back with another Fela musical, but this time it’s different. Not only is it produced by Nigerian owned Bolanle Austin Peters Productions (BAP Productions), but also, it’s an alternative telling of the Fela stories we are used to; where his activism and struggles with the government take a back seat role to the lives of Fela’s wives. Fela and the Kalakuta Queens attempts to exonerate the reputation of the women in Kalakuta Republic by celebrating the part they played in the success of the pioneer of Afrobeats.
This musical will get you singing along, swaying in your seat and tapping your feet along to the musical beat of popular songs like ‘Zombie’, ‘Suffering and Smiling’, ‘Yellow Fever’, ‘Lady’, ‘Palava’, ’Shakara’ and many other jams. The show also features Nigerian-American actress/host, Osariemen (Osas) Ighodaro Ajibade. Osas plays the role of an American journalist who visits the African Shrine but ends up staying for a while creating a dramatic tension between her and the Kalakuta girls. With the energetic flashy dancing (choreographed by Paolo Sisiano and Justin Ezirem) and the colourful costumes (designed by Ituen Bass), BAP Productions’ Fela and the Kalakuta Queens is sure to keep you fully entertained for 150 minutes.
Tip: Whatever you do, make sure you stay till the very end; you’ll get to meet one of Fela’s real wives.
Fela and the Kalakuta Queens have 4 more showings on Sat. 6th Jan & Sun. 7th Jan at 3PM and 7PM.
